International medical students/graduates who wish to apply to ECFMG for examination must
submit an Application for ECFMG Certification before they can apply for examination.
The Application for ECFMG Certification is an on-line application available through
ECFMG's Interactive Web Applications (IWA).
The Application for ECFMG Certification consists of questions that require applicants to
confirm their identity, contact information, and graduation from or enrollment in a medical
school that is listed in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED).
Applicants must also confirm their understanding of the purpose of ECFMG Certification and
release certain legal claims. Once an Application for ECFMG Certification has been
submitted to ECFMG, it typically remains valid throughout the certification process.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have met the examination requirements for ECFMG Certification and
are applying to ECFMG for examination, for example, to retake an exam for the purpose of
meeting a time limit imposed by a state medical licensing authority, you are not required to
complete the Application for ECFMG Certification.
TO COMPLETE AN APPLICATION FOR ECFMG CERTIFICATION, YOU WILL NEED:
ACCESS TO A PERSONAL COMPUTER (WITH A PRINTER IF YOU WISH TO PRINT A COPY OF THE
COMPLETED APPLICATION FOR YOUR RECORDS).
A computer with Internet access. The computer must have one of the following web browsers installed:
Microsoft® Internet Explorer 7.0 (or higher) or Mozilla Firefox 5.0 (or higher). Both Cookies

AN E-MAIL ADDRESS.
A USMLE/ECFMG IDENTIFICATION NUMBER AND AN ON-LINE SERVICES PASSWORD (see below for more details).
A VALID CREDIT CARD: We accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express.
A CHECKING ACCOUNT AT A UNITED STATES BANK: To pay by electronic check, you must have either a valid U.S. Driver's License or a U.S. Social Security Number.
If you have a USMLE/ECFMG Identification Number already, you can also pay in advance by sending a payment to ECFMG using Form 900. Once you have verified that the payment has been received and credited to your ECFMG financial account, you can begin the IWA application process. You can verify the status of your ECFMG financial account on-line using ECFMG's On-line Applicant Status and Information System (OASIS).
If you need to make multiple credit card transactions to pay for an application, you must make these payments to your ECFMG financial account in advance. See Methods of Payment in the ECFMG Information Booklet for instructions.
Before you can begin the Application for ECFMG Certification, you must have your USMLE/ECFMG
Identification Number and on-line services password:
If you have never submitted an application to ECFMG, you will need to complete the
ECFMG On-line Authentication Process to obtain a USMLE/ECFMG Identification Number. Click

Identification Number and a temporary password to be e-mailed to you before you can
proceed with the Application for ECFMG Certification.
If you have previously submitted an application to ECFMG, you will need your USMLE/ECFMG
Identification Number and password. If you have used ECFMG's OASIS, you already have a password. If you have a USMLE/ECFMG
Identification Number but do not have a password, you must complete ECFMG's On-Line
Authentication Process and wait for a temporary password to be e-mailed to you before

information you provide and, if a USMLE/ECFMG Identification Number exists for you, your
ID number will be sent to your e-mail address of record. If no e-mail address is

instructions for all items at any time. If you have any questions that are not

You should allow approximately 15 minutes to complete all items in the
Application for ECFMG Certification. You must complete all items in one session;
you cannot save a partially completed Application for ECFMG Certification.
When you have completed the Application for ECFMG Certification, you will have the
opportunity to review all information for accuracy and make any necessary corrections
or changes before submitting it. You will also be able to print a copy of the
Application for ECFMG Certification for your records. If you need to reprint your
Application for ECFMG Certification in the future, you can access it using OASIS.
Once submitted to ECFMG, an Application for ECFMG Certification typically becomes
valid immediately, allowing you to apply for examination. A notification will be sent
to the e-mail address in your ECFMG record confirming receipt of your Application for
